Like most entrepreneurs (alright – like most people), I was used to drinking 2-4 cups of coffee every day.

First, coffee can be super enjoyable. Nowadays it is one of my favorite morning activities. Not having coffee in the morning sucked.

Then there was the general sluggishness and tired feeling. And the will power it took to stick to this commitment. It was generally an unpleasant time.

But I think worst of all were the headaches. Starting on day 2 or 3 of no coffee, my head started to feel like it was going to implode.

And implode is a better word for it than explode. It felt like my brain was sucking on a sour candy and puckering, and bringing the rest of my skull along with it.

The headaches lasted for 4 or 5 days, at which point I realized that I must have made the right decision if my body was so dependent on the drink that I was having these horrible withdrawal symptoms.

And then it was over, and I just stopped drinking coffee.

Who needs it, right? I thought I was so tough.

So 8 or 9 months went by, coffee-less.

At the end of the year (this was 2014), I was starting a few new projects, one of which turned into Liberty Premium Grooming Co. I was reading a few blogs to get some ideas for launching products and making connections in my industry, and I stumbled across a post by online entrepreneur Pat Flynn where he talked about Bulletproof coffee.

I had read about it before, but didn’t think much of it. Who wants to drink buttery coffee that’s twice as expensive as other options?

But Pat’s recommendation piqued my interest. If it was helping him be more productive as an entrepreneur, maybe there was more to it.

After a bit more research, I decided that while I may not want to be dependent upon coffee, if there was a way that it could actually elevate me, instead of simply sustain a habit, I should have a look into it.

I did the math, and making it at home came out to about the same price as a large coffee from a popular national chain. So price was not actually an issue.

What The Heck Is Bulletproof Coffee, Anyway?

Alright, side note before we get too far ahead.

If you have no idea what I’m talking about…first of all, thanks for reading so far! Second, let’s talk specifics.

Bulletproof coffee is a great quality coffee, whose beans are dried in such a way as to reduce the possibility of mold forming in the coffee beans.

Yes, mold.

The typical method of processing coffee beans includes washing them and drying them. Only most commercial methods do not dry the beans “properly”, thereby allowing small amounts of mold to grow.

It makes coffee taste bitter, and can actually lead to the presence of mycotoxins, which can be hazardous to your health.

Anyway, Bulletproof coffee is specifically processed to eliminate the creation of mold.

So you grind the beans, to ensure maximum freshness and enjoyability. You can go ahead and brew your coffee right then, if you want. A French Press or Aeropress is the recommended brew style to get the best brew.

But if you want the real Bulletproof experience, here’s where you have to suspend disbelief and TRY IT before you judge it.

You’ve got your coffee, so now you’re going to need:

  • Unsalted, grass-fed butter (I use Kerrygold’s Grass-Fed Butter),
  • MCT Oil/Brain Octane Oil (it’s a fatty acid oil found in coconuts that can boost energy), and
  • A blender

Brew the coffee and add to the blender. Then add about 1 oz (2 tbsp) of butter and 1 oz (2 tbsp) of MCT Oil to the blender. Blend it for 10-30 seconds.

Why You Need To Try Bulletproof Coffee

So I got my ingredients, and made my first cup of Bulletproof coffee sometime in late 2014.

It was actually about the most satisfying thing I have ever done to start a morning.

First of all, the consistency is like a thick foamy latte, or so I hear. I never really drank fancy coffee, so I don’t have a lot of experience to say that, but that’s how it’s usually described by those in the know.

Maybe it’s better if I say it’s rich, foamy, and coats the mouth lightly with the oil (which is actually an important part of the experience. I ran out of oil the other day and the coffee was significantly different).

The day went on, and I literally noticed an increase in mental clarity. And I didn’t want another cup all day. And there was no crash.

So I had a cup the next day. And the next. And soon I realized I only had enough butter to get me through another day so I had to run to the store.

I picked up like 8 sticks of butter to keep in my freezer so I would never run out. Then I got a larger bottle of MCT oil (this is what I’ve been using). And when I ran out of my little 12 oz bag of coffee, I ordered the big 5 pound bag.

And I’ve kept that up ever since.

It’s now been about 18 months since I started drinking Bulletproof coffee, and I never dare miss a day. I just can’t afford to drop down to “normal” productivity levels.

This coffee boosts my mood, my metabolism, my productivity, and my energy. And unlike drinking “normal” coffee, I don’t get a crash. And I don’t need it just to reach the bare minimum productivity standards. When I drink it, I get a boost, even after all this time.

I probably made a pretty ridiculous sight the first time I traveled while drinking it. No blender, no French Press…it was an experience. But I did it because it is amazing. Good enough to suffer just to make it without the right tools.
