Guys, it’s not enough just to stop shaving. Putting down the razor doesn’t turn you into a bear-fighting, axe wielding, ladies man.

Saving yourself some money by removing razors and shaving cream from your life doesn’t automatically make you a good looking, alpha-male gentleman.

Any Tom, Dick, or Harry can grow a beard – after all, it’s the natural state of things.

So first of all, this is your wake up call to recognize that just because you have a beard, doesn’t mean it’s a good beard. You haven’t earned the right to lifelong praise as the strong, masculine, role model every guy wants to be and every woman wants to be with.

That praise comes with having a good beard.

What is a good beard?

Rather than simply ditching the razor, it means replacing your daily shaving routine with a daily beard grooming routine.

It’s the right shape, style, and length.

It’s well-kempt, conditioned, soft, and has the right shine.

A good beard is going to look different on every man, but the one thing that should be present in the routine of every man who pursues a good beard is a high quality beard balm.

If you don’t do anything else to your beard, a good beard balm – sometimes known as leave-in beard conditioner, beard wax, or beard softener – is an absolute essential.

When we’re helping men create a beard grooming kit, this is the first thing we cover. If you’ve got a limited budget, it’s the one thin you should buy. If you’ve only got a little time every day, it’s the one thing you should apply. Long beard, short beard, grey beard, thin beard, full beard … use a beard balm or suffer the consequences.

What is beard balm and what makes a good one?

Beard balm is like a combination of pomade and conditioner for your beard.

It provides important nutrients to your beard and the skin underneath to keep both your face and your facial hair healthy and strong.

It also helps style the beard, which is particularly useful if you have a medium or long beard. The use of a balm for styling purposes alone can drastically alter the appearance of a beard with any sort of length to it.

You’re going to be hard pressed to find a balm these days that’s not made out of natural ingredients, which is excellent, because you probably don’t want to be applying chemical-laden formulas to your face.

There’s just too much risk when you’re talking about the sensitive skin of your face, applying it close to your mouth, potentially rubbing off on your woman while kissing, etc.

So this eliminates a small percentage of the offerings out there today.

But what else should you keep your eyes out for?

Well, a balm is going to have a few main components, and must do a few main jobs.

What will beard balm do, and how?

One of the reasons why we love beard balm is that it conditions the hell out of your beard. By doing nothing else, you’ll get an amazing boost in beard quality with a good balm.

The essential and carrier oils with penetrate the hair and to some extent the skin around the hair roots, and will work to soften and strengthen the hair, giving you an amazing beard.

Not only that, but there are a few things that separate balms from things like straight up oils that allow them to have sealing properties, which helps to lock in that moisture that the oils are providing.

So the hairs are actually being fed nutrients throughout the day, and each hair is being kept “safer” and better able to absorb those nutrients because they’re protected by a sealant like a wax or butter.

The other big draw is that they’re sometimes called beard wax for a reason. Typically you’ll find beeswax in the product, which can not only act as a sealant as discussed above, but gives you some styling powers.

Have a few fly-aways that make your beard look a bit rough around the edges?

No problem, a good balm will keep those in check and make you look much more crisp and clean.

Don’t love the shape of your beard or the bushy look?

Go crazy and bend the beard to your will.

Balm keeps you in control, which is a key to self-sufficiency and increasing your confidence.

Hopefully by now you’ve gone and bought some beard balm, because you’re letting yourself down as a bearded man without it.

So let’s get a quick primer on how to actually use balm.

How to Apply Beard Balm

You’ll probably want to use beard balm once a day. Most people apply balm after a shower as part of their morning routine.

  1. Towel dry your beard, then you’re ready to apply the balm.
  2. Scrape the balm out of the container using your the back of your thumbnail. The exact amount will differ depending on the size of your beard. But, generally, you’ll want about a pea-sized ball.
  3. Take this bit of balm and rub it between your hands. The balm will react to your body heat and spread easily. Once your hands and fingers have a light coating of warm balm (it’s going to turn into oil, basically), run them through your beard.
  4. Spread the balm throughout your beard. Start down at the skin and spread upwards.
  5. Then reverse. Run your fingers downward from top to bottom. This spreads the balm into the hair follicles.
  6. Finally, work the balm into your moustache and the area around your mouth. And remember, good style dictates your beard hair shouldn’t cover your lips or mouth.
  7. Once the balm is spread throughout your beard, it’s time to style. A boar bristle brush or beard comb helps create a straight look. Otherwise, use your hands to sculpt the beard a bit and give it a defined shape.

From the what to the why to the how, we’ve covered pretty much everything you need to know about this vital beard care product.

When you’re ready for the next step, we’ll talk about beard brushes.
